For example, if someone tries to sell you a piece of blue-and-white or polychrome ware from Jingdezhen with a sandy or gritty bottom, it is a fake (e.g., it is Swatow ware, influenced by Jingdezhen, but not made in Jingdezhen). In Jingdezhen, ceramics were always fired in saggars (kiln boxes). Similar issues apply for potting. For example, during the Yuan dynasty, many potters used press-moulding techniques, particularly for larger wares, rather than wheel-throwing techniques. In later periods, such as the Qing and the 20th century, potters could throw very large wares on wheels.

I'm not sure if this ocarina actually requires such specific breath control, but I find that for the lower notes, I actually have to blow HARDER than I would the higher notes, or else my notes will be flat. Not sure if it's designed this way, or my ocarina is just.. interesting. The notes are very VERY loud, and I mean that in a good way. The way this ocarina projects itself, just sounds amazing. And, this ocarina doesn't really require any acute bend. It's just odd that I find myself having to lower my breath pressure a bit once I get pass the high C. Other than that, the ocarina feels very nice to hold, and it's very pretty looking. The ocarina itself is also very heavy compared to some of my other ocarinas, but I'm assuming it's due to the porcelain material. But the weight doesn't impact playing, and I personally love the heft it has to it. It feels and sounds high quality, that's for sure. This is a solid ocarina for a player who is ready for a nice upgrade. I definitely wouldn't recommend this for beginners however.

Thank you for this post as it has explained why I'm finding it difficult to locate a set of Johnson Brothers 'old willow'. I do so like drinking tea from a blue and white porcelain tea set. Old Imari is quite probably the most famous Japanese ceramic product in the world. China, the dominant exporter of porcelain, fell into internal disturbances in 1644 and it became hard to obtain Chinese products. The west requested Japan to step up production of porcelain instead of China because Europe did not have the techniques to make porcelain at that time. Thus substantial amounts of Japanese porcelain ware were made in the town of Arita and exported to Europe from the port of Imari by the Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie (VOC) from the late 17th to early 18th century in order to meet demand in the west. Thus Arita porcelain is also often known as Imari. Arita ware was the first porcelain product in Japanese history, and strongly influenced European ceramics.
