The 14-year-old Lungile is an aspiring writer. She develops a fear for the taxi driver that she instinctively knows will harm her. Is her fear real If something bad happens to her, who will rescue her In this real-life aspirational coming-of-age story, you will learn more about relevant social issues that teenagers need to deal with on a daily basis: abduction, substance abuse, diseases such as TB, anorexia and bulimia, crime, young teenage love, relationships and group pressure. Marianne van Heerden is an experienced author of educational and youth books. This is her second youth novel.
What about readers By this time your teens should be able to read most Afrikaans books with understanding. The sad thing is that most authors deliver wordly themes for this age group. Our suggestion is to just keep them reading the Trompie, Otters or the Straatspeurders series which we have recommended for Grades 7-8.
Learners are supposed to have a big enough Afrikaans vocabulary to be able to write coherent sentences for their grade level. Additionally, many parents struggle to speak or understand Afrikaans, which in turn leads them to feel hopeless.
The kids at my learning centre use Google translate for their assignments. If you paste in one sentence and then click on translate (one sentence at a time) it actually translates into perfect afrikaans. Google translate messes up the translation when the kids are pasting entire paragraphs of English sentences in and then clicking on translate.

New Africa Books specialises in publishing educational books and literary books for adults, young adults and children. It has its roots in David Philip Publishers, which was formed in 1971 by the late David Philip and his wife Marie. David Philip Publishers was a renowned independent book publisher in South Africa, famous for publishing Nobel Prize laureates Wole Gordimer and Nadine Goridmer. It was 1999 that David Philip Publishers became New Africa Books through merging with two small publishing houses. Be warned: these textbooks are completely in Afrikaans, so I suggest having a good base in the language before getting started. Further, once you have completely the 9 grades, there are other textbooks available completely in Afrikaans to grow your vocabulary.
